Blog Post #5- Grace

Learning about genocides these past few weeks has made a huge impact on me. I have a whole other perspective on the world because I never realized how someone could be so evil. I have always been a person to find the light in everyone and everything. It was hard for me to learn about the Holocaust because there was no good in anybody who took part in it by hurting other people and it was emotionally very harsh reading Night and learning about Elie Wiesel's horrible experience, and going to the Holocaust museum and seeing visuals. My perspective on humanity has changed. I always knew bad things happened but I never knew how extreme it could get especially learning that there were camps just for killing and people being gassed or burnt to death when they had done nothing wrong.I have taken away a lot from this unit learning about the Holocaust. The hardest part for me to understand is how somebody could be so horrible and how other countries didn't believe what was happening dur...

The March- Grace

The March Icy wind Blowing violently   We marched Faster We had the feeling of being alive No longer marching We were running Night Pitch black The SS ordered to shoot Fingers on the trigger   One of us stopped BANG! One foot in front of another like a machine Don't think Don't stop Run Men collapsing Gunshots Every step Red flames A shot then death Running in human waves I closed my eyes The whole world would pass Dreams of another life swept away Blind fate Tired Chilled Famished Parched We pressed on Death Fatigue Our natural needs lost Stronger Colder Overcome by Hunger Doomed Lost all strength Lost all illusion Our legs moved mechanically Not a living soul One more hour At last the order to halt.

Luck is such an important theme in Night because it plays a vast part in the story of Elie’s fight for survival. With some good luck in all the horrible luck that has enveloped him, he has made his way to the concentration camp alive. Elie's luck sustains by being at the right place at the right time or being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Some of the people at the camp have been gracious to him like the soldiers who let him be with his father: “ ‘Please sir,...I’d like to be near my father’ ‘alright. Your father will work here, next to you.’ We were lucky”(50). This is very good luck for Elie because he was not split up from his father like the rest of his family, and in addition, Elie got his request granted by the Germans to let him work near his father. Elie has experienced a lot of bad luck throughout the book especially with being in the wrong place at the wrong time: “Idek was venting his fury, I happened to cross his path. He threw himself on me like a wild beast, be...

The novel Night by Elie Wiesel is a very powerful book in many ways. A recurring main theme throughout the book is the use of manipulation. As Elie jumped right in the story my heart sank. I took me a few minutes after I read the sections to realize that something that horrible actually happened: “We were told that he was a charming man, calm, likable, and polite. Three days after he moved in he brought Mrs. Kahn a box of chocolates… Germans arrested the leaders of the Jewish community. From that moment on, everything happened very quickly. The race toward death had begun. First edict: Jews were prohibited from leaving their residence for three days, under penalty of death”(10). Before people were arrested, the Germans were living with the Jews in their homes. The Germans were very polite and had gained the Jews trust while living with them. Just 10 days later the Germans came and arrested the head of the Jewish community and made up rules with the penalty of death. The Jews thought ev...
