Blog post #3 - Eliza

In Elie Wiesel's Night, "good" and bad luck is an important”,”, recurring theme. Throughout the book, there are many situations of "good luck" which was normally being in the right place at the right time or, there was bad luck which was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. "Please sir... I'd like to be near my father." " 'All right. Your father will work here, next to you.' " "We were lucky." (50) This is "good" luck because the person Elie asked to sit next to his father was nice enough to allow Elie to be able to sit next to his father. There also happened to be room for his father next to him. Elie wanted to keep a watch over his father to make sure he his safe. This quote is around the middle of the story where I think it was one of the hardest times for Elie “One day when Idek was venting his fury, I happened to cross his path. He threw himself on me like a wild beast, beating me in the chest, on my head, throwing me to the ground and picking me up again, crushing me with ever more violent blows, until I was covered in blood. As I bit my lip is order not to howl in pain, he must have mistaken my silence for defiance and so he continued to hit me harder and harder.”(Wiesel 53) This in an example of bad luck because Elie was in the wrong place at the wrong time and happened to get caught watching Idek when he was not supposed to be, so he had to take his consequences.

    This theme although very true I didn't see it very often in the novel. Given that information, your examples were perfect for the theme. Great work Eliza!

    Brilliant piece of work Eliza! I do agree with you where you said there is a mix of " good luck " and bad luck. The quote where it's about where him being able to stay with his father was truly a blessing. With the second quote, where it says Elie happened to cross paths with Idek, was very unlucky for him, as Idek started to beat Elie up. Overall, outstanding work with your blog post!

This experience of the Holocaust affect me on an emotional level. Before this experience I did not know much about the Holocaust I just had heard of horrible man named Adolf Hitler and the genocide he had created. After reading the book Night and after the documentaries and films that we watched I've been slapped by reality. I've been dwelling a lot on my own as well, about how people could have so much hatred on the people who are their neighbors. Just ordinary people that have so much hatred. I'm just so confused how people could just back stab their neighbors as soon as a new political party rose. Ordinary people turning into monsters you don't see that everyday. I've taken away so many things from this unit. I think the thing that just draws me the most from in this unit is to never forget. So many innocent people died just because of what they practiced and what they look like. So the least I can do is memorialize them by never forgetting what happened to them....

Blog Post #5 - Ever

Learning about the Holocaust has had a great impact on me. Previously I had little knowledge of its existence, now I know of its horrific impact on our past and present. It's difficult to comprehend the suffering these people went through. Even though it's devastating to process we have to understand so that we don't make the same mistakes. Nadia Murad’s article filled me with empathy as well as anger. Our world is still infected with thriving hatred, people are truly suffering. As citizens of a free country, we must take action, support survivors and give them justice. We need to stop squabbling over the small things and fight for human rights.

The about the Holocaust has made me more aware of how easy it is for us to turn to evil and believe it’s right. When I was first learning about the Holocaust, the word fear seemed to stand out the most to me. The Germans blamed all of their problems on the Jews because of fear, they put the Jews in ghettos because of fear, or they tried to annihilate all the Jews because of fear. I think it is really important to pay attention to people’s feelings especially feelings like fear and desperation. I feel like we, the world let this happen. We allowed this to happen because of our arrogance. We expected that just because we gave Germany a whole bunch of rules to follow and took some of their land, they would immediately become subordinate to us. And even after the Holocaust we in America allowed things like this happen during the civil rights movement.
