The March
Icy wind
Blowing violently
We marched
Faster
We had the feeling of being alive
No longer marching
We were running
Night
Pitch black
The SS ordered to shoot
Fingers on the trigger
One of us stopped
BANG!
One foot in front of another like a machine
Don't think
Don't stop
Run
Men collapsing
Gunshots
Every step
Red flames
A shot then death
Running in human waves
I closed my eyes
The whole world would pass
Dreams of another life swept away
Blind fate
Tired
Chilled
Famished
Parched
We pressed on
Death
Fatigue
Our natural needs lost
Stronger
Colder
Overcome by Hunger
Doomed
Lost all strength
Lost all illusion
Our legs moved mechanically
Not a living soul
One more hour
At last the order to halt.
Grace,
ReplyDeleteWhile I enjoyed reading your poem, and recognized some of the quotes, I can't identify the overall theme/topic/motif. I understand it is about the death march, but how does that specifically link back to Elie?
Grace,
ReplyDeleteyour poem is very well written. It has a lot of meaning to it. You did very well.
